Superintendent's Message

Spring 2017

By Mr. John Zegers

Dear Friends of the School District of West De Pere,

Spring is drawing near and our school district is bursting with exciting news as we approach the end of another successful school year.  Over the last several years, I have communicated to you through this newsletter that the School District of West De Pere is a school district of choice demonstrated by the enrollment growth we have and continue to experience. As a result, we constructed an addition onto Hemlock Creek Elementary, and have begun to look at enrollment growth and facility planning opportunities district wide to ensure that quality programming can be maintained for all students 4K-12 in West De Pere. Our current facilities will soon reach capacity or exceed.

The Board of Education has directed the Administrative Team to investigate options that would maintain building level capacity and optimal classroom sizes while embracing our enrollment growth. We have been discussing future options for the past several months that would include, but are not limited to: current and future building utilization, grade configuration, financing scenarios and taxing impact. Our discussions have now reached a point where a community survey is quickly drawing near. People in our community speak positively about what is happening in our schools and soon (fall of 2017) we will be asking all of you to complete a survey with regard to the priorities you would envision for years to come. Your Opinion Counts. The survey will consist of enrollment projections, financial planning background, facility options, funding support, and pathways to reach the best possible outcome to add to our capacity. It continues to be more imperative than ever that we continue to build a strong college and career ready curriculum, recruit and retain quality staff, and create school facilities that are regularly maintained with state-of-the-art equipment to allow our students to compete with the best and the brightest in the state of Wisconsin. The survey can be completed in one of two ways: online with an access number specific to your household or by paper copy. School Perceptions LLC, an independent Wisconsin based firm with expertise in conducting confidential community surveys, will assist us with the data collection. We look forward to reaching out to all of our community members as we create a pathway to a better School District of West De Pere for future generations.

I would like to conclude by expressing my congratulations and thanks to the many students in our school district who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom, on the court, field and on stage in a variety of ways. Let me share with you a few of those accomplishments: Jermaine Evans – State Cross Country qualifier; Chloe Irish received a scholarship to Eastern Illinois for Cross Country and Track; Girls Varsity Basketball Team – won their 3rd straight Conference Title;  in addition the Girls Varsity were    Regional Champions, first time in 40 years, with a win against Notre Dame Academy; Liz Edinger – reaching the career 1000 point scoring club in girls basketball; Kyle Kosobucki – received a scholarship to play baseball at Winona State; five wrestlers qualified for sectionals: Keenan Graef, Michael Milquet, Bryce Graef, Evan Frisque, and Quinton Schuyler. Keenan Graef and Michael Milquet recently advanced to participate in the State Tournament in Madison. Congratulations Phantoms.

The mission of the School District of West De Pere is to create a safe comprehensive educational and social environment for students and staff which will produce life-long learners with the capacity to succeed in the local and global community
