“Phantom Fundamentals Lunch Contest” – Mrs. De Villers
The 7th grade Family and Consumer Education (FACE) Class sponsored a staff lunch contest on October 2, 2006. This was an effort to promote healthy lunches. Staff members from grades 5 -8 volunteered to display their lunches on the counters by the cafeteria windows. Students voted for the healthy lunch that they thought was most appealing. 7th grade FACE students served as mentors for the students voting.
There were two ways to win this contest. The staff member that received the greatest number of votes was able to reserve a parking spot of his/her choice for one week. Students decorated an orange cone to reserve the winner’s parking spot. Also, all staff members who participated in this contest had their names put in a drawing. A name was drawn to designate another winner of a reserved, chosen parking spot to be used after the initial winner’s week was up.
This event allowed for new and stronger connections between students and staff. It also provided new lunch ideas in a fun and convenient way. It promoted healthier eating in an economical way and helped to put Phantom Fundamentals to practice.
“Wisconsin Governor’s Challenge” – Mrs.Rollin
In the fall of 2005, 106 West De Pere High School Students successfully completed the Wisconsin Governor’s Challenge. The challenge required students to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day, for a minimum of 5 days per week, for 6 weeks. West De Pere students kicked off of event on September 26, 2005 and completed the challenge on November 4th. Activity logs were provided by second period teachers. At the end of the six weeks, the activity logs were sent to the Governor’s office in Madison. All successful participants received a certificate of participation and an award patch. Their names were then put into a school-wide drawing for a bicycle donated by Stadium Bike. One very lucky winner went home with a brand new Trek Mountain Bike at the end of an all-school assembly! The goal of this program was to promote physical activity, help to improve fitness levels, and encourage healthy behaviors for a lifetime. The event was co-sponsored by Governor Jim Doyle’s Office, Trek Bicycle Corporation and the Wisconsin Sports Development Corporation. This year, we will be doing the Governor’s Challenge at the high school November 6th – December 15th for interested teachers and their students.
“Shape Up Wisconsin Kids” – Mrs. Fairchild, Mr. Draves
For the past two years, the students at Westwood Elementary School have participated in the “Shape Up Wisconsin Kids” program sponsored by McDonald’s. They plan to do the event again this school year, in May of 2007. This event requires 30 minutes of continuous physical activity. Every Westwood student and staff member participated in a 30-minute walk around the school grounds. The purpose of this program is to promote an awareness of the importance of physical activity. In 2004, over 142,000 students from 500 schools in Wisconsin participated.
“Jan Derouin Memorial Track Meet” – Mrs. Fairchild
This event has been historically held on a Saturday in May at the West De Pere High School track. The meet was designed for students in grades K-6 and includes the following events: 50 meter dash, 800 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 1600 meter run, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash and 400 meter relay. Students run against others in their same age group. All participants receive a ribbon and an event card for recording their times. No places are awarded.
The Jan Derouin Memorial Track Meet was originally called the “Too Good For Drugs” track meet. It was started in 1988 for students in grades K-6 with funds from
West De Pere Middle School’s S.A.D.D. chapter and the Mendez Program. Since 1988, the track meet has been held every year at West De Pere High School except for 2 years due to lightning and the resurfacing of the track. In 1997, the name changed. Jan Derouin was an employee of WDP’s former Lincoln Elementary School from 1980-1995. She dies of cancer in January, 1997 and the track meet was then named after her. She was one of the first volunteers to help organize and run the meets. Jan spent a lot of time and energy in making the track meets successful. The “Jan Derouin Track Meet” is about being an active participant, doing your best and having a good time – the way Jan lived her life.
