March 2008 NEWSLETTER

Dear Hemlock Creek Families –

It is hard to believe that we are more than halfway through the 2007-2008 school year! The next months are becoming filled with guest speakers, fieldtrips, the
musical, and other school related events.

Communication is a key component to your child’s academic progress. The partnership of parents, teacher, and student is critical in fostering progress and growth for our students. We hope that your child continues to experience a year of growth
academically, socially and emotionally. Although there are no formal spring
conferences scheduled, our staff remains available to answer your questions or
concerns.

Teachers will be contacting parents on a “needs basis”. However, if you feel it is
important to meet at this time to discuss your child’s progress, teachers can be
contacted by voice mail or email and a mutually convenient time can be discussed.
We are also beginning to plan for the 2008-2009 school year. Attached you will find a letter outlining the procedure for any parental requests.

Great Kids
+ Great Parental Involvement

Dressing for the Weather

Please remember to send your child with appropriate outer wear each day. This should include winter jacket, snow pants, mittens/gloves, and hat when the temperature nears freezing and winter boots when it snows. Please remember to label all items with your child’s name. Children are outside for a grade level recess and lunch recess each day or may be waiting at the bus stop. The wind can make the temperature feel even colder. We want all children to stay healthy so they can do their best at school. Students that are not wearing snow pants and boots will need to remain on the blacktop during recess.
Inclement Weather

As the winter months approach, parents need to prepare themselves and their school age students for inclement weather and unexpected situations. Winter months bring fewer daylight hours. Students walk to school or to their bus stop in dark or dusk conditions. Parents need to ensure their students wear some type of reflective clothing so motorists can see your children. Parents need to ensure their children’s winter clothing protects their children from the winter, cold, rain, and snow. Winter weather can change quickly and sometimes without notice. Be sure your children know what to do if school is delayed or released early. If school is released early, parents need to be prepared. Ensure your child has a key to your house. Parent need to inform the childcare provider to receive the child early. During winter weather, schools may dismiss while parents are still at work.
In case of a severe weather storm or other serious inclement weather school closing or early dismissal will be broadcast over the following radio stations: WNAM, WOSH, WDBG, WJLW, WWWX, WVBO, WXWX, WDUZ, WQLH, WGEE, WIXX, WROG, WNCY, WOZZ. Please do not call school unless absolutely necessary since it will tie up phone lines needed for contacting busses, drivers, and personnel. Remember that buses will probably run a little late when the roads are in poor condition.

Notes from the Nurse
By Dawn Schaefer RN

DON’T GET SIDELINED BY THE FLU

Don’t let the flu stand in the way of your school work, sports, extracurricular activities and your family fun. Follow these tips to protect yourself:

Common sense can help you and your family avoid the flu.

Practice Healthy Habits- Wash your hands often with soap
and warm water for at least 20 seconds to help prevent germs from spreading. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, because the virus can spread when your hands touch surfaces that are infested with germs. Finally, if you think you have the flu, stay home from school to help you get better and prevent your friends from getting sick, too.

Mind your Manners- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing, and throw away your used tissues.

What’s Mine is Mine, What’s Yours is Yours- Don’t share drinks, water bottles, eating utensils or cell phones with friends.

If possible, get a flu shot.—Many children are at higher risk for complications from the flu. Talk to the school nurse or your healthcare provider about whether a flu shot is best for you.

Is it Cold or Flu? – Know how to tell the difference—If you have a stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and a hacking cough, you probably have a COLD. If you have a high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, extreme tiredness and a dry cough, you probably have the FLU.

What to do if the flu catches up with you. If you have flu symptoms, stay home from school. See your healthcare provider as needed.

Talk to the School Nurse if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s health at 337-1087 ext. 8031.

Lit Tip
Tips for Increasing Literacy in your Home

By: Lisa Hollihan-Allen, Reading Specialist

Take every opportunity you can to help increase your child’s vocabulary. You can do this by pointing to things and
asking the child to tell you what they are, or you can stop and
explain the meaning of any words in your reading that the child may not understand. The more you talk to your child, the faster their vocabulary will grow.

FREE SUPPLIES!

Every time parents, students and school supporters give Hemlock Creek’s 5% Back to Schools ID number when buying qualifying school supplies at Office Depot, our school receives credits equal to 5% of the qualifying purchases to use for FREE SUPPLIES! Our school ID number is 70216592.

Jump Rope for Heart Success!

Hemlock Creek’s very first Jump Rope for Heart Event was a huge success! The total raised was $9777.70! That’s amazing! Some interesting facts:
The average JRFH events raise $3,217
The top 1st time event in the NATION raised $13,000 (we were sooo close!)
Our top HC class was Mrs. Cota’s 3rd grade with a class total of $1,501.50!

Great job everyone—
Next year will be even bigger and better!

MARCH IS READING MONTH

Throughout the month of March our focus will be reading. We will be having a kick off assembly on March 3 and
various activities during the month. Each grade level will also be decorating their resource area and room doors into reading world themes. Grade levels will then sign up and read in the different areas. Kindergarten will host a “jungle”, First grade “outer space”, second and third will be “Under the Sea” and 4th and 5th grade will become a “rainforest”.

A reading month calendar will also outline the different activities. Instilling a love for reading in our students will help pave their way to academic success. One of the best ways to do that is to read to them! When you read to your children, you’ll help them become lifelong learners. Through books, you and your child can explore a world together without even leaving your living room. Celebrate “March is Reading Month” with your children and start a new
family tradition of reading together!

Bellin’s Kids for Running

Again this year West De Pere Elementary students will have the opportunity to train to run the Bellin 10K Run in June.  There will be an informational meeting for parents of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade
students interested in the after school training here at Hemlock Creek Elementary.  The meeting will be at 6:00 on March 4, 2008, right before the PTO meeting.  This is a great way to promote healthy living!  Hope to see you there!

Mary Bain, Kids for Running Coordinator

4 Year Old Kindergarten

Hemlock Creek is currently accepting registration for our new 4 year old kindergarten program for 2008-2009. If your child will be 4 years old by September 1, 2008, they are
eligible to attend. The program will be run as a morning and afternoon session. Classes will be held at Westwood, Hemlock Creek, or, a yet to be determined, community site. Parents can register in the offices of either elementary school. You will need to bring proof of residency, your child’s immunization records, and their birth certificate. Any questions, please call 425-1900 or 337-1087.

What MOVES U?

In the 21st century more emphasis is being placed on wellness in schools and in the work place. Studies are showing some alarming findings. Did you know that only one in four students get 30 minutes of physical
activity each day? Did you know that 6 out of 10 students ages 9 to 13 don’t participate in any kind of organized sport or physical activity outside of school? Did you know that twice as many children and three times as many teens are overweight today as were in 1980? As a result, children are developing serious health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high blood cholesterol levels at earlier ages. Twenty five years ago, “play” involved active movement, games and sports. Children were more likely to play outdoors, run around the neighborhood with other children, and participate in physical education classes every day at school. Now “play” includes more sedentary activities such as using the computer, playing video games, and
watching TV. Did you know the average American child spends 44.5 hours per week using some sort of entertainment media, such as
television, a computer, or a video game?

The NFL and the American Heart Association have teamed up for a program called What Moves U. The program provides in school
learning materials, a website, youth targeted media, and events and contests. The Green Bay Packers are supporting this in our community. I would invite you to check out their website at: http://www.WHATMOVESU.com

As parents you can also help your children by being positive role
models, getting your family to be active, limit TV, video games and computer time, encourage your child to try different activities, be
supportive, and encourage healthy eating habits.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Mark your calendar for this year’s Musical. This year it will be 4th and 5th grade students from Hemlock Creek performing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Mrs. Brenda May is the  director.

The musical will be performed in the high school
auditorium on April 10 and 11, 2008 at 7:00pm.

Seroogy’s Chocolates

Pick up for your Seroogy’s chocolate orders will be on Wednesday, March 12th from
3:30—5:30pm in the Hemlock Creek commons.

Come One Come All To ……..

Hemlock Creek Elementary School’s
Spring Fever Literacy Night Event For Grades
Kindergarten and First
March 11, 2008 6pm.

Join us for a night of fun and education!

We’ll hold several parent sessions, such as:
Decoding Strategies for Unknown Words
Building Comprehension

Our children workshops include:
Story Telling by Barnes and Noble
Story Telling by the Brown County Library
Butterfly Books will have a “Make and Take”
session.

There will be raffles and refreshments!

Although the evening will be geared for
kindergarten and first graders, families are
always welcome! Call the school office to RSVP.

Classroom Placements

If our efforts to create a well balanced classroom for everyone’s benefit, parent teacher requests that have an education need will be considered. It may be
necessary to limit the number of requests in any one classroom in order to provide a mix of students. If a parent request is honored, we will give preference in future years to parents who have not made a previous request. Requests must be submitted in writing by March 31st to the principal. It is important that your request contains educational reasons for such a
request.

Ready for a Road Trip?

Take a trip to the Scholastic Book Fair at Hemlock Creek on Thursday, April 24th. Watch for more
