JANUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH 2007-08

Kayla and Jeremiah

West De Pere High School is proud to announce Kayla and Jeremiah as Students of the Month for January.

Kayla was chosen by her teachers for her dedication to academics and her passion for global issues. With her 3.94 GPA, Kayla has been a strong leader in the classroom throughout her high school career. A natural writer, Kayla has used her passion for words to express her concerns about politicians, the environment, big business, and world events through her membership on the forensics team and on the school newspaper staff for the past four years, serving as editor-in-chief for the past two.

Teachers nominating Kayla for Student of the Month commented on her serious commitment to learning and the sensitive maturity with which she carries herself. English teacher Natalie Buhl described Kayla as an informed, compassionate citizen.

Kayla acts on her beliefs through active involvement in her community. She has been a member of the Community Assistance Program (CAP), Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), and the Senior Mentor Program.

Kayla stays physically active with her involvement in the school’s tennis team, for which she was voted MVP and Most Improved this past year, and with her involvement in speed skating, for which she was a gold medalist at the Badger State Games in 2007.

Kayla plans major in public policy in college.

Jeremiah has been an integral part of West De Pere High School in numerous ways. Most notably, Jeremiah has a talent for performance which he has demonstrated in multiple school plays and musicals including The Wizard of Oz, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Music Man, Fame, Sussical, and Cinderella. Director Jane Johnson speaks highly of Jeremiah: “Jeremiah is one of the most enthusiastic and dependable actors I have worked with in my years at West.  He never disappoints me.” Jeremiah’s singing ability has made him a key member of the Concert Choir, the Chamber Choir, and the Wisconsin Honors Choir.

Jeremiah’s singing and acting passion have also carried over into his involvement in the FFA which he has been part of since second grade, entering rabbits and art projects. Along with holding various leadership positions in the local FFA chapter, Jeremiah has performed with the State and National FFA Choirs, has led acting seminars through 4-H, and has performed at the Brown County Fair.

At school, Jeremiah has been a notable member of the soccer, wrestling, and golf teams for several years. In addition, he is a strong leader in the classroom, often encouraging other students to become enthusiastic about course material. Jeremiah currently holds a 3.66 GPA.

Next year Jeremiah plans to attend UW Green Bay for elementary education.
