West De Pere DECA is an Association of Marketing Students. DECA is a student organization with over 160,000 members internationally and the average annual membership in Wisconsin is 7,800 high school students. DECA is intra-curricular thereby; enhancing marketing instruction and career/work-based learning. The purpose of DECA is to provide learning opportunities to marketing education students through goal-oriented chapter activities.
The mission of DECA is to enhance the co-curricular education of students with interests in marketing, finance, management, and entrepreneurship. DECA helps students develop skills and competence:
- for careers in marketing and business
- build self-esteem,
- experience leadership,
- practice community involvement.
The West De Pere High School DECA chapter is student-oriented and is a self supported organization. Our DECA chapter is to the marketing education program what a civic or professional organization is to a group of business people.
DECA activities provide members with the opportunities to serve in leadership roles, work in teams, and receive local, state, and international recognition. These same activities serve the instructor as a teaching tool by creating interest in all phases of marketing, Finance, management, and entrepreneurship. Our activities include:
- Business Leadership Labs at the Kalahari, Wisconsin Dells
- The Miracle Minute project for the “Muscular Dystrophy Association”
- Promotion newsletters for the De Pere Chamber of Commerce
- Business oriented workshops
- Marketing and Business live competitions
- Taking field trips
- Organizing a “ice breaker” pizza outing in fall at “Chuck-E-Cheese”
West De Pere marketing and business students involved in DECA have an opportunity to compete with other students from other schools in marketing and business related events. Competition begins in January with the North Eastern Wisconsin Regional Competition at Preble High School in Green Bay. Students earning high scores then proceed to the State Career Development Conference held in March at the Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva. Students who earn highest test scores at State can qualify for the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California for 2013.
DECA was established in 1945 on our National level. Wisconsin secondary marketing teachers voted to become part of the organization in 1965 and West De Pere has been active since 1981 with Mr. Jack Alexander serving as its advisor. DECA is nonprofit, nonpolitical and student oriented.
