Bill Turnquist Inducted to the Hall of Fame

Congratulations to the West De Pere High School's football coach, Bill Turnquist who was inducted to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Bill was inducted on April 2, 2005 at the 26th Annual WFCA Hall of Fame Banquet in Middleton, WI. This is a very prestigious award and West De Pere is very proud to have Bill teaching our students on and off the field! The plaque that Bill received on April 2 will be displayed in the Lambeau Field Atrium and at Camp Randall in Madison. Once again, Congratulations for all of your accomplishments! Bill graduated from Greenwood High School, Greenwood, Wisconsin, in 1964 where he played football, basketball, and baseball. In college he played freshman basketball and was a four year starter at defensive back on the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse Football Team. He was chosen two years All-Conference, All District, All-American honors and MVP his senior year. He later served as Assistant Freshman Coach under Coach Bill Terry. He graduated from LaCrosse in January 1969 with a B.S. in Physical Education. In 1978 he received his Master's Degree from Mankato State University. Bill started teaching Physical Education in January of 1969 at Gifford Jr. High in Racine, Wisconsin. His first head football coaching position was in Hayfield, Minnesota, in 1969 where he taught Physical Education for six years. He also was assistant basketball and track coach. His 1971 football team was undefeated at 10-0. In 1975, Bill became the Head Football Coach at West De Pere High School. He has taught both Mathematics and Physical Education. During his thirty-eight years as head coach his teams have won nine conference championships and have qualified for the state playoffs eight times. He has been named Green Bay Metro Coach of the Year seven times, La Crosse Alumni Coach of the Year (1983), Assistant Coach State Shrine Game (1997) and District 4 Coach of the Year four times. His overall record is 207-130-1. Bill has also coached track and has been Athletic director for ten years. And lastly, he would like to thank the parents and the West De Pere community for their complete support and enthusiasm for the Phantom football program.
