Mission Statement:
To create an alliance in the school and community to help make people feel more comfortable with being who they are.
GSA membership is open to any West De Pere student or staff membe and everyone is welcome to participate in GSA events.
We have three main events each year: Pride Week, Face the Facts Day, and Day of Silence.
Pride Week is held in the fall of each year. GSA encourages all students to be proud to be who they are, to celebrate not only their own uniqueness but the uniqueness of those around us. During the week we encourage students and staff to wear rainbow ribbons to support GSLBT individuals.
Face the Facts Day is held in the winter of each year. Face the Facts Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness of the issues many people deal with based on their gender or sexual preference. The rights and securities that many Americans take for granted are things that others struggle with daily. During the day, students and staff wear signs symbolizing issues that GSLBT individuals may face on a regular basis.
The Day of Silence is a nationally recognized day in April of each year. Each year students at West join thousands of students in high schools and college campuses across the nation in a Day of Silence to protest the discrimination, harassment and abuse—in effect the silencing—faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students and their allies in schools. A 2003 National School Climate Survey found that more than 4 out of 5 Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and 29% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety. The Day of Silence is one way students and their allies are making anti-bullying, harassment and name-calling unacceptable in American’s schools.
