Drama

Advisor:
Mrs. Johnson

2007 One Act Play
Drama 101
Written by Zach Johnson, Mrs. Johnson, and the cast!
Directed by Mrs. Johnson
Co-Directed by Zach Johnson

The setting: A High School Theatre Class
Situation: A drama teacher is hoping for her class to present scenes which reflect the “craft of acting.”
Topic: All the students are given specific viewpoints and situations to reveal a truth about dating.
Result: Not quite what the teacher expected.
After all, as long as there are teenagers, there will always be drama

This year’s One Act Play, Drama 101, was a hit! In order to top all of our awards last year, we challenged ourselves by writing our own script. Starting the first day of school, we used improvisation to write our script. Each day of rehearsal, we improvised scenes based on a scenario about dating. Then, we videotaped our rehearsals, so that we could write a script using what was working in rehearsal. Next, we decided our context would be a theatre class where the students had to prepare scenes about dating for their teacher. And that’s how Drama 101 came about.

We advanced through District and Sectional competition to the State Competition which was held at UW-Stevens Point on November 16 th and 17 th. We performed for a full house on Saturday afternoon---even Dr. Gerke was there! It was a rousing success; the audience loved it! And so did the judges. Our play won the highest award at the State Competition: The Critics’ Choice Award.

Also, the judges decided that everyone in the cast was fabulous and awarded the entire cast an Acting Award for the Ensemble! The play also received an honorable mention (meaning one of three judges awarded this play) for directing.

Mrs. Johnson is so proud of the cast and crew for its phenomenal work! She’s also so very pleased that her son Zachary, an alumnus of WDP, worked as co-director and writer on the play! What a successful year.
