Just a Reminder
If your child is ill we need you to call the office and let us know by 9:00 AM. If you do not call in the absence it may be considered unexcused.
Removing your child early from school on a regular basis results in them losing important instructions that wrap-up the end of the day activities. Please try to make it a habit to have them at school, on time and have them stay at school until dismissal.
Summer Session 2008 Tutoring and Fast For Word
We will again be offering tutoring and Fast For Word for elementary students over the summer of 2008. During the month of June tutoring will be offered at both elementary schools during the morning sessions from 8:00 – 12:00. Tutoring services will also be available from 12:30 – 2:30 at the Phantom Knight School (Charter School) during the month of June. (All tutoring, all summer long, that takes place in the afternoon will be held at the Phantom Knight School which is located at 300 S. 6th Street.)
All tutoring from July 7 – August 15 will be offered at the Phantom Knight School. Sessions will be 8-10 AM, 10–12 and 12:30-2:30. We will also schedule a Fast For Word session during your tutoring time if your student (grades 2-5) would benefit from that experience.
Charges for tutoring will be $10.00 and $10.00 for Fast ForWord. If you child is in attendance at the Community Center Day Camp and you wish for them to be in tutoring during the summer we can facilitate that process by providing assistance from the Community Center to the Phantom Knight School and then back to the summer day camp program.
All students K-12 are welcome to sign up for tutoring. Our staff will provide instruction based on student need.

Literacy Tip for May
Take turns thinking of two words that end with the same sound. Examples, mom, some; dog, rug; paper, feather.
Encourage independent writing. Your child may use “inventive” spelling or “sound” spelling. Your child may tend to omit letters, producing such spellings as LFNT for elephant. Use correction wisely. What you should be most concerned about is the child’s sensitivity to the sounds that need to be represented.
PTO Meeting
Our next PTO meeting will be on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 in the Music Room at 7:00 PM.
Thank you to our PTO for the Family Fun Night. It was a HUGE success. Everyone had lots of fun. The baskets and generosity of the community was extraordinary. We had 110 donations to draw in our raffle.
Sometimes it seems as though things will not come together. The West DePere community can always be counted on to make events like Family Fun Night the highlight of the year for the children. Words do not convey the gratitude we have for your efforts and dedication.
Don’t forget to stop by the Brat Barn at Festival Foods on June 6, 2008. Proceeds from the sales will be going to our PTO.
Take Charge of Education- Target Donation
Our school received $227.57 because of the parents who used their Target Red card. Target donates up to 1% of all purchases made with their store card. Thanks for your continued support.

School Immunization Requirements 2008-2009
It is not too early to start thinking about the immunizations your child needs before the next school year starts. The Wisconsin Student Immunization Law, which delineates the minimum required immunizations for students at each age/grade level, was recently changed. Two different vaccine requirements were added which may affect your child’s compliance with the law. The change will go into effect this fall with the beginning of the 2008-2009 school years. The new requirements are as follows:
• 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) for all students entering 6th, 9th, and 12th grades, and
• 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine for students entering Kindergarten, 6th and 12th grades.
Tdap is a new vaccine recommended for adolescents and is anticipated to help prevent pertussis (“whooping cough”) from occurring including pertussis outbreaks in schools. Pertussis can place a significant burden on children and parents as a person with pertussis must be isolated for a minimum of 5 days of antibiotic treatment. Two doses of varicella vaccine have been shown to be more effective than one dose in preventing “breakthrough disease” cases of chickenpox in children of all ages.
There are a few exceptions to the Tdap and varicella requirements. If your child has already received a tetanus-containing vaccine (e.g. Td) within the last 5 years, your child is compliant and Tdap vaccine is not required. The second exception is for varicella vaccine. If your child had chickenpox disease, even after the 1st dose of varicella vaccine, further doses of the vaccine are not required.
For more information about the Wisconsin Student Immunization Law, visit the Wisconsin Immunization website at http://www.dhfs.state.wi.us/immunization/, or contact your child’s school. Immunizations are available through your child’s primary care provider, or through the health department. City residents can call 339-4054 to set up an appointment, or to find out more information.

The City of De Pere Health Department will be sending a monthly newsletter to help keep you active and enjoying a healthy life. We would like you to enjoy spring and be safe. Have Fun!
1. Biking to School
Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride. You want the helmet to be comfortably touching the head all the way around, level and stable enough to resist even violent shakes or hard blows and stay in place. It should be as low on the head as possible to maximize side coverage, and held level on the head with the strap comfortably snug.
Ride on the right, in the same direction as auto traffic.
Use appropriate hand signals.
Respect traffic lights and stop signs.
Wear bright color clothing to increase visibility.
Know the "rules of the road. Go to http://www.aap.org/family/bicycle.htm for more information.
2. Walking to School
Make sure your child's walk to a school is a safe route with well-trained adult crossing guards at every intersection.
Be realistic about your child's pedestrian skills. Because small children are impulsive and less cautious around traffic, carefully consider whether or not your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision.
Bright colored clothing will make your child more visible to drivers.
Spring is here!! Let’s Play
Fly a kite, Rollerblade, Skateboard, Scooter, Shoot some hoops,
