Sixth Grade

During the coming school year, your sixth grader will learn the following knowledge and skills. These academic benchmarks will be used to track your child’s learning progress and determine his/her grades.

Language Arts

Reading :

  • Uses a variety of decoding and word analysis strategies
  • Uses a variety of comprehension strategies
  • Makes inferences
  • Summarizes main ideas and key points
  • Understands story elements and their effect on the piece of literature (characters, setting, plot – conflict, obstacles, climax, resolution)
  • Identifies literary techniques and devices and their effect (flashback, foreshadowing, point of view)
  • Comprehends a variety of genres and understands their defining characteristics (myths, historical fiction, biography)
  • Applies criteria to evaluate literary works

Ancient Americas:

  • Knows how the past can be interpreted using a variety of sources

 

Ancient Europe:

  • Knows how structures and their decorations reflect cultural values and ideas
  • Understands how laws are developed
  • Understands how governments are established and maintained
  • Understands and defends a position of concern

 

Early Middle Ages:

  • Knows that culture influences people
  • Knows that differences in cultures may lead to understanding or misunderstanding among people

Over the course of this school year, the teachers will be using these benchmarks to prepare lessons, projects, and assessment activities to guide your child’s learning and help him/her achieve the grade level expectations of the West De Pere School District.
