Seventh Grade

During the coming school year, your seventh grader will learn the following knowledge and skills. These academic benchmarks will be used to track your child’s learning progress and determine his/her grades.

Language Arts

 

Reading :

  • Uses a variety of decoding and word analysis strategies
  • Uses a variety of comprehension strategies
  • Makes inferences
  • Summarizes main ideas and key points
  • Understands story elements and their effect on the piece of literature (characters, setting, plot – conflict, obstacles, climax, resolution)
  • Identifies literary techniques and devices and their effect (aside, imagery, suspense, symbol, tone)
  • Comprehends a variety of genres and understands their defining characteristics (drama, science fiction, poetry, mysteries)
  • Applies criteria to evaluate literary works

Magnetism and Electricity:

  • Knows the physical properties of magnetism and electricity and how they interact

 

Erosion and Deposition:

  • Knows how erosion and deposition change the physical features of the land
  • Knows how living organisms affect the earth’s surface

 

Plate Tectonics:

  • Understands how plate tectonics dramatically changes the earth’s surface
  • Understands how theories and models discovered in the past can be used to predict and impact future occurrences

 

Science Investigations and Inquiry:

  • Uses the scientific method to conduct investigations (PHEOCA)
  • Communicates results from scientific investigations
  • Uses scientific evidence to defend or take a position on an issue

Social Studies

World History (1400-1650)

The Renaissance and The Reformation:

  • Knows how socio-economic factors may lead to conflict among people
  • Knows how artistic expression reflects the beliefs of a culture

Absolutism and Kings:

  • Understands how governments are established and maintained
  • Understands services provided by the government

 

Exploration/African Slave Trade/South Central America:

  • Understands how people in different regions of the world interact with their physical environment
  • Understands and defends a position on an issue of concern
  • Knows the risks and rewards with starting a business
  • Knows the natural resources bases of the world

 

Colonization of America:

  • Knows that differences in cultures may lead to understanding or misunderstanding among people
  • Knows the strategies of conflict resolution
  • Knows the factors that influence the wages of workers
  • Knows abut the movement of people, ideas, diseases, and products through the world
  • Knows significant people and events in the major eras of world history

 

Over the course of this school year, the teachers will be using these benchmarks to prepare lessons, projects, and assessment activities to guide your child’s learning and help him/her achieve the grade level expectations of the West De Pere School District.
